What are the main dfferences between the two as I have only done a bit of yoga and never done pilates. i am planning a home birth so want to learn breathing techniques and strengthen muscles to try and make things easier for me.
It's really personal preference. If you opt for special pregnancy classes there probably won't be a huge amount of difference between the two. Otherwise, make sure the instructor knows you are pregnant as there are some positions that should not be done in pregnancy.
I have been doing active birth yoga throughout my pregnancy which is geared towards helping with the labour. Do a search on the active birth centre and see if there is a teacher in your area.
Oh and it's really not true that you shouldn't start yoga in pregnancy. A good instructor will make sure that you don't injure yourself, and pregnancy yoga is extremely gentle anyway! The class I go to always has new people joining and they get real benefits from it.

My husband and I are wanting another child but I’m concerned about the weight gain. When I had my son, I weighed 180 but got down to 140. By not watching my diet and getting in too little exercise, I have manage to get back too close to my pregnancy weight. If we were to conceive, is it possible to gain little or no weight?
Ok for the people responding taking stabs at my ability to be a good mother, if you read my last sentence, I also mentioned gaining little weight. No where in my question did I say I would diet during pregnancy putting the baby at risk so please read before riduculing! During my overweight aunt’s pregnancy, you couldn’t really tell she had gained weight. I figured being overweight & pregnant would cut the 30lbs weight gain down at least by half.
If you are overweight, it can be done safely. I was 30 pounds overweight when I got pregnant the last time and didn’t gain any by eating healthy and staying active. A HEALTHY pregnancy will gain you 10-20 pounds, so use that as your guide. My sister, who is 5’8″ and weighs 105 most of the time, usually gains 10-15 pounds during pregnancy. She has had 10, yes that’s TEN kids. Eat healthy and have healthy snacks to help prevent unwanted weight. Check with your doctor about the right weight for your size and height. Your doc will help you maintain a healthy weight for you and the baby.

I am 20 weeks pregnant and cant decide whether to take yoga or pilates classes.
Either is good as long as the instructor is aware of your pregnancy and what you should/shouldn’t avoid. You are always safer to not start new exercise while you are pregnant to avoid injury so go easy and listen to the teacher.
The best exercise in pregnancy I think is swimming or aquanatal exercise classes

Actually, I will clarify that I know that exercising during pregnancy is safe and most doctors will normally advice some exercise. My question is more, as a person who does not normally exercise at all, would it be safe for me to start walking more and maybe doing light weights for my arms while I’m pregnant (I am not yet)?
The reason why I think this may be a good thing is that I want to cut down the chances of developing gestational diabetes or pregnancy-related hypertension. I also may get me into better shape so that I can lose post-pregnancy weight faster.
I know you are not doctors but maybe someone here has previously questioned your doctor on this.
Thanks!
Tara
If you start before you become pregnant, it’s better. But yeah, light, low-stress exercise is very much recommended. It helps with your own health, and (big bonus) helps make the actual labor easier.
You just sometimes have to take it down a bit. For example I’ve been doing physical therapy for my back, and my physical therapist just gave me a gentler, easier, set of exercises for while I’m pregnant. If you’re wondering about any specific exercise, just be sure to talk to your doctor.
