Does anyone have suggestions on how to slow down weight gain in pregnancy?

I have gained about 10 pounds since finding out about my first pregnancy a month ago, and it didn't help that at the time I had just started a new weight loss program that I had to give up. I am so frustrated with this because I am trying to eat as well as I can but it seems like now more than ever food is always on my mind. I try to remind myself that I need to eat healthy for the baby, but everyone I know didn't start out their pregnancy overweight, so they don't have the same body image problem I do. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to manage the weight gain better during the pregnancy or to slow it down so I'm not gaining 8 pounds a month during my pregnancy? I worked really hard to get down to the weight I was at and I am already dreading being back at what I was three years ago when my weight loss odyssey began. I think that maybe if other women give me suggestions I can handle it better and maintain my weight gain better during this time.

I think that focusing on your weight is going to be the problem. Instead, focus on the exercise. Swimming is wonderful for example. Get in to swimming, clocking yourself, seeing how many laps, etc..
Get involved in a program that lets you weigh yourself every week, and has supportive staff.
Get rid of all the junk in the house
ALL OF IT.
so you can't just grab something easy
don't pull in to a fast food restaurant…
get rid of the pop
get rid of the juice
keep water on hand at all times
and keep drinking it
it's good for you and mini.

eat good veggies, fruits and proteins and small ammounts of whole grain foods, and low fat dairy, the baby has to have food to grow, and ask your doctor about all of this too, they should have booklets on pregnancy nutrition.

it really sucks but i doubt any of us can give you better advice than what you'll get in the books your probably reading, like what to expect when your expecting or the girlfriends guide to pregnancy. It hard watching yourself "bloom" just try to love yourself. go out for a walk eachday and tell yourself while your walking im doing this because i love myself. if nothing else it will give you a few minutes alone each day. or if you have other kids put them in the stroller my son loves it. get yourself a pedometer it more fun for me now that i know how far ive gone. they are cheap. when you get the craving you shouldnt give into just tell yourself again, i love me. im worth eating something more nutritious.

I can give you an answer, but I'm ambivalent about this issue! Here goes: When I was about 5 months pregnant with my son, my doctor did some blood work and concluded that I might be at risk for gestational diabetes. I had been gaining weight at a normal rate until that time. She put me on a kind of modified Atkins diet. Now I know some people love Atkins, and I'm not here to trash the man, but I HATED it. I remember going into the supermarket and being really bummed that I could eat anything on the two opposite sides, but just about nothing in between. It made me crabby and hard to live with–ask my husband.

The flip side is that I literally did not gain one pound during the second half of my pregnancy, and thus didn't have much to lose afterwards. So I guess in that sense, it sort of worked. My son was born beautiful and healthy. Was it worth it? I'm still not sure. I think I might have had a happier pregnancy if I'd been able to have a little ice cream now and again, for goodness sake.

Body image is another issue, one that I had to deal with too. A lot of people will tell you that you'll be back to yourself in no time. I did not find that to be the case, even without having gained much extra weight. Your body just never goes back to quite the same contours it had before. (Who can blame it? It carried another human being for almost ten months! Pretty extraordinary!) But that body can still be beautiful, and you can still take care of it. Your identity is about to undergo a radical change, but you can be a great mom and still let yourself be a teeny bit vain. In fact I encourage it. All the best as you begin this new, scary, and incredibly wonderful part of your life!

I was originally 50kg before I fell pregnant and gained 25kg (yes, half my body weight) during the pregnancy. I think it went everywhere because people always commented on the fact that I didn’t have a very big belly. However by the time I got home from hospital I was back down to 55kg. I had a low risk pregnancy and a 4 hour drug free natural birth. So I guess I’m saying… it’s ok to gain lots of weight in pregnancy! LoL

Whey you see your weight spike it’s always such a disappointment and when you are pregnant it’s doubly hard to stick to eating healthy because you often more hungry.

The best thing is to eat about 6 small meals a day. These can be things like raw veggies, string cheese, fruit, small bowls of cereal, yogurt, etc. Also never eat second helpings during main meals, keep the portions average and try to eat slower. If you have to have something bad go for sugar free puddings or popsicles or dark chocolate, but again eat those things in moderation as well.

    Hope that helps,
    Elizabeth :-)
